The stele forest was built in the Northern Song Dynasty Zhezong two years (1087 AD), by the Jin, Yuan, Ming, Qing, the Republic of China maintenance and addition, the scale continues to expand, the number of hidden stones is increasing, in 1961 by the State Council as the first batch of key cultural relics protection units in the country. Now there are nearly 3,000 pieces of steles and epitaphs from the Han Dynasty to the present, 1,089 pieces are exhibited, and the number of steles and epitaphs is the largest in the country, and the collection era series is complete, and the time span is more than 2,000 years. It is known as "the treasure house of oriental culture", "the abyss of calligraphy art", "the palace of fine stone carvings of the Han and Tang dynasties", and "the world's oldest stone carving library", and is one of the most valuable cultural relics in Xi'an.

The city wall was built on the basis of the Tang Imperial City in the early years of the Ming Dynasty. Since its completion, the city wall has gone through three major sizesof refurbishment. In the second year of Longqing in the Ming Dynasty (1568), Zhang Zhi, the governor of Shaanxi, presided over the restoration, making the Tucheng a brick city for the first time; In the forty-sixth year of Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty (1781), Bi Yuan, the governor of Shaanxi, presided over the renovation of the city wall and city tower; Since 1983, the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government and the Xi'an Municipal People's Government have carried out large-scale repairs to this ancient city wall, rebuilt the East Gate, North Gate Arrow Tower, South Gate Gate Tower, and Suspension Bridge that have been demolished, and built a ring city park, so that this ancient building has rejuvenated its former style and become a major tourist landscape in Xi'an. Hanguang Gate, Suzaku Gate, South Gate, Wenchang Gate, Heping Gate, Jianguo Gate and East Gate are all located in Beilin District. 

In October 2018, Xi'an City Wall and Forest of Steles Historical and Cultural Scenic Spot became the 34th batch of national 5A-level tourist attractions, the 9th 5A-level scenic spot in Shaanxi Province and the fourth 5A-level scenic spot in Xi'an.
